Piano Panoply: A Celebration of the Piano and its Music: Past, Present and Future

Piano Panoply: A Celebration of the Piano and its Music: Past, Present and Future

WAAPA is proud to present Piano Panoply, a three-day celebration of both historical and modern pianos from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 October in the Richard Gill Auditorium, with four unforgettable concerts, a free interactive exhibition, a public lecture, and a research symposium.

Piano Panoply will be led by music directors Dr Tonya Lemoh, WAAPA’s Head of Classical Piano, and Stewart Smith, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Centre for Keyboard Heritage and Performance Research, who will be joined by an impressive array of leading music scholars and brilliant performers.

The inclusion of ECU’s remarkable historic pianos has been made possible through the generosity of our supporters, with special recognition to the Feilman Foundation and the Wright Burt Foundation.

So, if you’re passionate about the piano, this fabulous three-day festival celebrating the multi-faceted world of this glorious instrument is not to be missed!

PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

FRIDAY 3 OCTOBER

9.00am - 4.00pm SYMPOSIUM - FREE

5.00pm - 6.15pm KEYNOTE ADDRESS - FREE

Renowned scholar Dr Andrew Snedden delves into the connections between the past and present in the sphere of Western art music. His keynote address, Crisis and Creativity: Art Music Performance in the 21st Century, will explore the following: Few musicians realised in 1900 that their profession was about to undergo rapid, radical change. The seeds were already planted for three revolutions, one sociological, one aesthetic, and one technological. Just over a century later, we face the same three disruptions in an imminent future.

7.00pm - 9.00pm CONCERT - Romantic Piano Inspirations: Liszt and Company

Enjoy the music of Liszt and his contemporaries performed on period instruments.

SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER

1.00pm - 3.30pm HISTORICAL PIANO EXHIBITION AND INTERACTIVE SHOWCASE - FREE

Master piano technician Dr Paul Tunzi shares his expertise and attendees are welcome to play the instruments.

5.00pm - 6.15pm    CONCERT - The Australian Album: A Recital

Dr Lemoh performs a selection of pieces from authentic 19th century Australian music albums.

An exploration of the extraordinary range of modern piano music, including the world premiere of a newly commissioned work for modern piano, historic piano, viola, and electronics by renowned Noongar composer and WAAPA alum, Dr Aaron Wyatt. This new composition is a poignant and nostalgic tribute to ECU’s Mount Lawley campus, which has been WAAPA’s home since 1980.

SUNDAY 5 OCTOBER
