WAAPA presents the Olivier Award-winning Legally Blonde: The Musical in a sold-out season from 6-12 September. With music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and book by Heather Hach, this show has been a fan favourite since its Broadway debut in 2007.
Legally Blonde: The Musical follows the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrols at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, only to discover her own potential along the way. With a score full of catchy tunes like Omigod You Guys, Bend and Snap and So Much Better, the show promises laughter, empowerment, and an unforgettable week of performances.
Senior lecturer Crispin Taylor is adding Legally Blonde: The Musical to a list of more than 50 productions he has directed over his 22 years in WAAPA’s acclaimed Music Theatre department, including hit shows Strictly Ballroom, Spring Awakening, A Chorus Line, Mack & Mabel and, most recently, Cats.
“Legally Blonde is an iconic 2001 American romantic comedy film, which was based on the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown, who chronicled her own journey as a young blonde woman studying and practising law,” says Taylor. “It was the Barbie movie of its generation, and its heroine, Elle Woods, championed a women’s movement long before #MeToo”.
Taylor is joined by choreographer Jayne Smeulders and musical director Glenn Hogue in leading the cast of 3rd Year Music Theatre students in their final WAAPA production. They are accompanied by 2nd Year Music Theatre students and an orchestra of highly skilled student musicians.
“Although our production is set in 2002, the themes of this musical remain eternal and universal. Our talented student creatives, cast and crew have shaped an interpretation that speaks to audiences, young and old, of then, now and the future!” says Taylor.
Production Design student Elisa Von Perger has worked closely with Taylor to create a fresh version of the show that focuses on the subcultures of the time and displays how stereotypes can both control and liberate characters who choose to embrace them.
Behind the scenes are an array of Production and Design students, including props and scenery, costume, sound, lighting and stage management, working hard to bring this theatrical vision to life.
