The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts has released its 2024 Performance Program, with over 300 performances and concerts on offer throughout the year.
WAAPA’s Executive Dean, Professor David Shirley said: “We’re delighted to once again offer our supporters a year of engaging, highly accomplished and inspiring range of performances across acting, dance, music, music theatre, opera and performance making.”
Highlights include WAAPA’s Classical Voice students performing an English translation of Mozart’s sublime comic opera, The Marriage of Figaro, in March and an evening of rafter-raising choral music in A Postcard from Paris at St. Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday 22 August, performed by the WAAPA Chorale and organist Stewart Smith, under the baton of guest conductor Christopher van Tuinen, Artistic Director of West Australian Opera.
Other visiting artists who bring their talents to WAAPA in 2024 include Australian music legend Paul Grabowsky AO, who performs two concerts with the Jazz students in May as part of WAAPA’s annual Jazz in the Theatre program; percussion stars Aiyun Huang, Adam Tan and Fiona Digney; music technology innovator Iran Sanadzadeh and cutting-edge audio-visual duo Black Zenith; internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Vladimir Gorbach and Argentinian-Australian pianist Andrea Katz; award-winning singer-songwriter Ben Abraham; jazz luminary Paul Williamson and jazz vocalist Emma Pask; and Melbourne-based Afro-Cuban powerhouse La Influencia.
Visiting music faculty and students from Nanjing University of the Arts, one of the oldest and most-renowned music institutions of higher education in China, collaborate with WAAPA Music staff and students in July for three concerts – Sparks and Synergies, East-West Alchemy and Ensembles Showcase – in what will be a stunning celebration of musical virtuosity and cross-cultural cooperation.
In September, the Music Theatre students take to the stage of the Geoff Gibbs Theatre in the perennial favourite, Legally Blonde, while the Acting students tackle Stef Smith’s Nora: A Doll’s House, a modern adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play. That same month, the Performance Making students create original, inspiring and entertaining theatre at The Blue Room Theatre in TILT.
A WAAPA ‘first’ is on the calendar from 31 October to 2 November at the Heath Ledger Theatre. In the first full collaboration between WAAPA’s Dance and Music departments, Verge presents WAAPA’s Dance students performing with the WAAPA Symphony Orchestra and Defying Gravity percussion ensemble under conductor Jessica Gethin.
These are just a few of the exciting performances WAAPA has in store for its audiences that showcase the extraordinary accomplishments of its highly talented students.
Tickets for WAAPA performances are in high demand and shows often sell out. Beat the rush and join the Friends of the Academy now to take advantage of their preferential early bookings and other benefits, while supporting the next generation of performing artists and creatives.
