Aspiring contemporary musicians in the Great Southern region are invited to develop their musical training through a one-year diploma course run in Albany by expert staff from the renowned Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

WAAPA has a well-deserved reputation for producing world-class arts practitioners, including superstar contemporary musicians such as Tim Minchin, Meg Mac and Dulcie.

Following its highly successful annual collaboration with Great Southern high school students for its popular Radio Active concerts, WAAPA now offers a tertiary course for contemporary musicians in the region.

The one-year Diploma of Music will be delivered in Albany by WAAPA staff, who will run ensembles and classes each week, allowing students to remain in the Great Southern while studying.

“Helping to develop the depth of talent in the region is what excites us the most about this program,” says Associate Professor Jonathan Paget, WAAPA’s Associate Dean of Music.

“Transitioning from high school to university involves relocating to Perth or elsewhere, which can be a big adjustment for regional students. Offering this Diploma course in Albany provides young musicians the opportunity to build their skills and get to know our staff for a year without leaving home.”

The CUA50820 Diploma of Music focusses on performance outcomes as students develop strong practical skills on their chosen instrument or voice.

This nationally-recognised qualification prepares students for a wide range of careers in the music industry, giving them the knowledge and skills to become a performer, composer or sound engineer.

While students may choose to go into the industry on completion, the Diploma is designed to progress students to a Bachelor of Music entry level to further enhance their skills and artistry.

“For a year, you can take your musicianship to the next level, you can meet others like you who are inspired and excited by making music every day,” says Assoc. Professor Paget. “And the best part is, there’s no ATAR required – it’s all down to your playing.”

Auditions will be held in Albany on Saturday, 2 December. Apply now!
