Jonathan W. Marshall is the coordinator of postgraduate research at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and is the first port of call for postgraduate inquiries. Jonathan also teaches graduate and undergraduate performance history.
Associate Professor Jonathan W. Marshall is an interdisciplinary scholar with a background in history. Jonathan was the first Postdoctoral Fellow at WAAPA, 2004 – 2008, before working as senior lecturer and coordinator of research in the School of Music and Theatre Studies at the University of Otago, in Aotearoa New Zealand. Since 2016, Jonathan has been back at WAAPA, where he is a senior lecturer and Coordinator of Research Higher Degrees. Jonathan is your first port of call for inquiries about WAAPA’s Master of Arts (Performing Arts) and PhD programs.
Marshall has written extensively on late 19th century neuropathology, the hysteria diagnosis, and their relationships to performance, and has published a 2016 monograph on the subject: Performing Neurology: The Dramaturgy of Dr Jean-Martin Charcot (Palgrave MacMillan 2016). Marshall is an internationally recognised scholar of the avant-garde Japanese dance form known as butoh. Marshall’s work on the topic has appeared in TDR: The Drama Review (2013), Performance Paradigm (2006), The Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance (2019), and elsewhere. Marshall’s survey of Australian butoh and Body Weather is due in 2024. Marshall has an ongoing interest in landscape and performance, the non-human and performance, First Nations performance, history and performance, sound art, avant-garde music and digital/electronic musics, and the visual arts as they relate to performance. Much of his work has been inspired by French art historian Georges Didi-Huberman.
In addition to his academic profile, Marshall has been publishing on dance, theatre, sound, and performance, for over 20 years, contributing to street press, newspapers, specialist online magazines, radio and other media. He was a contributing editor for RealTime Australia (1998-2017). As of 2023, Marshall was regularly working for Limelight magazine, The Conversation, Seesaw magazine, and other outlets.
Jonathan is an interdisciplinary scholar with a background in history, performance and art criticism. He has published extensively in diverse areas ranging from butoh dance to contemporary photomedia, sound art to Brechtian theatre, cultural modernism, hip hop, Noongar performance, and relations between neuroscience and art.
