As a member of the Darlington String Quartet, Zak shares responsibility for the String Department at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Background

Zak is a violinist in the Darlington String Quartet and also Principal 2nd Violin of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. He grew up in the UK, achieving a scholarship to Chetham’s School of Music at the age of 10, read Music at the University of York, and Post Graduate at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Zak developed his love of chamber music with lessons from the Sorrel, Lindsay and Fitzwilliam quartets. He gained valuable orchestral experience playing with the Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and English Northern Philharmonia orchestras.
Zak moved to Perth in 1997 to join the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and become Principal 2nd Violin in 2014.
As a chamber musician, Zak has toured both locally and internationally, performing for Musica Viva and the ABC. He has played on a diverse collection of recordings, from the soundtrack to Tim Winton’s ‘Breath’ to live Classic FM broadcasts, and has just finished recording James Ledger’s string quartets for the ABC.
