Jonathan is a Lecturer in Cello at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He is the Cellist in the Darlington String Quartet (WAAPA's Quartet-in-Residence) and he also co-directs the WAAPA String Department.

Background

Jon Tooby is a Cellist, Conductor, Chamber musician and Artistic Director with nearly 40 years of experience in the profession. At 18 Jon joined WASO as a cellist, it's youngest member for many years. In his early 20's Jon spent a number of years in London studying cello at the Royal College of Music having lessons with William Pleeth and Christopher Bunting. It was also during his time there where he developed his passion for chamber music winning numerous awards and competitions with his Piano Trio. Jon also won the Royal College of Music Concerto competition performing Don Quixote by Strauss.

In 2004 Jon started the Darlington Chamber Music Series, where with the Darlington Quartet and many other fine musicians are still presenting sold out concerts in this most unique and special setting. Indeed this series has seen numerous world premiers and is celebrating it's 20th season in 2023.

Jon's chamber music collaborations extend far and wide having performed across Australia, Asia and Europe. Along with his regular chamber music collaborators in Darlington, Jon is also a member of I Cellisti, A cello quartet formed in 1995 and still touring mostly to Japan.

In 2010 Jon is also a orchestral conductor and is currently the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Darwin Symphony Orchestra a job he won in 2018. Jon has worked with numerous orchetstra's including WASO , WA Philharmonic and WAYO as well as WAAPA Symphony Orchestra. He has also worked with WA Opera and WA Ballet.

Jon is also a passionate educator and has taught, mentored and coached students from all ages. He Has tutored at National Music Camp, WAYAChamp, Musica Viva and Menhuin School in U.K.
