The Friends of the Academy are a group of people who support the students and the objectives of the Academy.
They come from all walks of life but mostly they are lovers of the arts, parents or supporters of students,

WHO ARE THE FRIENDS? The Friends of the Academy are a group of people who support the students and the objectives of the Academy. They come from all walks of life but mostly they are lovers of the arts, parents or supporters of students, graduates or staff, or locally-based graduates themselves. Perhaps the most important way this support can be given to the students is by being there, attending the performances regularly and enjoying and encouraging the talent and commitment of the performers. Every year at the Annual General Meeting, usually in early March, a small committee is re-formed. Members are welcome to nominate for the committee, or for other tasks, such as helping at the students' welcome barbecue in April or other fundraising events during the year. THE FRIENDS OF THE ACADEMY NEED YOU! Become a Friend of the Academy and support WAAPA students. Each year the Friends of the Academy raise approximately $40,000 to directly assist students at the Academy. This contribution is vital - with the great demands rehearsals and their performances make on their time, Academy students sometimes find it difficult to support themselves through casual or part-time work. It is for this reason that the Friends as a group provide pastoral care and assistance in the form of interest-free loans to students in financial difficulty. These loans have played a valuable part in helping many talented and committed students who might otherwise have been forced to give up their course. The Friends also meet new students arriving in Perth without local contacts, hold the annual students barbecue, and recognise high achievers. The funds raised by the Friends are also used to help final year students make the transition into their profession by financially supporting them in the form of travel grants which enable them to attend auditions in the eastern states or to prepare audition tapes or resumes. The Friends also provide about $6,000 each year to help fund the annual Showcase tour of interstate promoters and agents. Membership fees and fundraisers help provide student benefits, such as furniture and kitchen for the student Green Room, dishwasher for the WAAPA bar, the theatres lighting hoist, and the purchase of musical instruments. In order to raise these funds, the Friends rely on subscriptions from members and a number of fundraising events such as Friends' nights at major performances, auctions of goods and services, a fun quiz night compered by talented broadcasting staff and students, film nights, behind the scenes tours and rehearsals, and other special events organized from time to time. It is Friends' contributions which help give WAAPA students their chance. WHY BECOME A FRIEND? Enjoy the best entertainment in Perth, including music, theatre and dance, while at the same time helping talented students to achieve their goals. Friends also benefit from the following:
